BHP and Rio Tinto have completed a megawatt-scale charging test on a Caterpillar Cat® 793 XE battery-electric mining truck at the Jimblebar iron ore mine in Western Australia.
The charging test exceeded 1 MW, marking an important step in the development of electric heavy equipment for large-scale mining operations. The ongoing trial is helping assess charging infrastructure, operational efficiency and the feasibility of battery-electric haul trucks in demanding mining environments.
As the mining industry moves toward lower-emission operations, advances in electric mining equipment and high-power charging technology are becoming increasingly important.
